McCormick honors 2012 Unsung Heroes, and names Ezeka of Western Tech and Schanberger of Loch Raven High as winners of $36,000 McCormick Scholarships

SPARKS, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 11, 2012-- McCormick & Company, Inc. (NYSE: MKC) announced that Geraldine Ezeka of Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, and Ryne Schanberger of Loch Raven High School are the 68th and 69th recipients of the Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship. Established in 1969, the scholarship has a four-year value of $36,000 for each student-athlete.

The scholarship winners were chosen from a total of 112 candidates who were the Unsung Heroes winners from 68 Baltimore area public, private, parochial and independent schools. Ezeka and Schanberger are seniors, a requirement of the program.

Ezeka was recognized by her coach for diving for all loose balls, never quitting on defense and taking the charge calls. Committed to the team conditioning program, Geraldine pushed her teammates and was often seen running behind those who struggled on conditioning runs offering words of encouragement as they persevered. Her coach said, “Geraldine has a winner’s heart and a passion for the game, an understanding of what it takes to be a team and a subtle leadership quality.”

Ryne Schanberger did what was asked of him to improve the team overall and took some unusual measures to better the performance of a teammate in need. Dedicated to the summer workout program, Ryne’s coaches saw him as a mature, high-character individual who would be a great role model for his teammates. An offensive guard, Ryne was also asked to perform as team punter, a position he had never tried. He took on the challenge and developed into a reliable punter. A teammate of Ryne’s had trouble executing his blocking assignments. Ryne worked out a series of verbal and non-verbal cues to communicate to his teammate what he should do on specific plays. It worked, and the teammate developed as the season progressed. “While his enthusiasm is relentless, he remains respectful and unassuming, never looking for credit or praise for himself,” Ryne’s coach said.

The late Charles Perry McCormick founded the McCormick Unsung Heroes program in 1940 to recognize athletes for unselfish team play and highlight the efforts of those who contribute to the success of their teams without acclaim. In 1969, the scholarship was added to the program in his honor.

The keynote remarks were given by CBS news correspondent and Baltimore native Byron Pitts.

More than 700 Baltimore area officials, school administrators, coaches and family members attended the event on May 7th.
